Common Dolphins
Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) are one of the most widespread and easily recognised dolphin species found in New Zealand waters. Known for their striking hourglass pattern and playful nature, these dolphins are highly social. They are often seen in large pods, sometimes numbering in the thousands, and are renowned for their acrobatic displays, including leaping, breaching, and bow-riding.
In New Zealand, common dolphins are frequent visitors to the Bay of Plenty, Hauraki Gulf, and around Kaikoura. They feed on a variety of schooling fish and squid. Their acrobatic displays and curious nature make them a crowd favourite.
